Haines Alaska |
Haines is located in Haines Borough at the terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway (entering the state), or the beginning of the Alaska Marine Highway (leaving the state). Haines was originally called "Dtehshuh" by the Chilkat Indians, which means "end of the trail." Located on Portage Cove at the Chilkoot Inlet of the Lynn Canal, Haines is 13 miles from Skagway by water, but 359 miles by road. The site is an old Indian trading post that attracted Russian and American settlers and missionaries. It later grew as a mining supply center.
Just south of the city on Portage Cove is the site of Fort Seward, the first permanent U.S. military installation, which began as an Army post and was incorporated into the city. Haines also is the home to the world's largest congregation of bald eagles. Visit Chilkat Eagle Bald Eagle Preserve, just 18 miles from Haines, for a glimpse of those impressive birds of prey.
